El caracol común es originario de Europa, aunque habita en muchas otras zonas, y se consideran una de las primeras fuentes de proteína de origen animal. Se calcula, no obstante, que el consumo de caracoles comestibles en el mundo supera las 300.000 toneladas y los mayores consumidores son Francia, Italia y España. El principal exportador de caracoles del mundo es Marruecos, aunque China y Japón se
perfilan como grandes abastecedores.
